First of all, a word or two about affiliate marketing: most of you know that it refers to the internet marketing practice in which affiliates of a business get rewarded for every customer who buys the product promoted online that has been referred through their marketing efforts. There are four players in the game: the Retailer, the Network, the Affiliate and the Customer. The advertising methods may include paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, display advertising, article marketing.

What do MLM businesses have that can be applied to the rules of affiliate marketing? Almost everything: firstly, a product that can be promoted online. Then, hopefully, a bunch of enthusiastic people who are willing to promote it online, thus becoming “affiliates”. Even the classic network structure of an MLM system can – and does – agree with the modern marketing practices employed all over the internet today. Meaning that you can apply the rules of a Multi-Level structure to your internet team, while you train them on new internet marketing strategies, in order to promote online the product(s) of the MLM company.

Since you might question the potential of such a business on the internet, remember first of all, that very large companies were built and have had an enormous growth, based on such a network marketing model. Secondly, think of the enormous potential of human resources the internet offers, as compared to the circle of friends and acquaintances surrounding the person(s) in everyday life.

What’s typical about an affiliate marketing MLM network model, as compared to the classic MLM model, is that the former has a 1 tier (1 level) structure, and, sometimes, a structure that goes 2 tiers / levels deep, while a typical Multi-Level Marketing structure has levels that go as “deep” as 15 or more levels. Meaning that, if you, as a distributor, have distributors that, in their turn, bring other distributors, you get commissions from these distributors’ sales, as well as from their following distributors and their downline, up to…infinite levels! It is pretty obvious that you can’t have such a structure in an affiliate program!

Another difference between an MLM network and an affiliate marketing MLM network is that you don’t need to purchase the product or pay a license fee when you join affiliate marketing MLM networks, or any affiliate program in general. As for trainings, affiliate marketing networks do not charge for those either, while you’d normally pay to attend the classic MLM network seminars and conferences.

However, if you start building an online team, you’d need to offer them more than the classical MLM training. The part of the training that’s the most important for them is the online marketing training, where you would have to teach them what strategies to use to succeed online, to generate more leads and grow their business – and income. This means that you have, and already use, the proper marketing techniques, and are ready to pass them on to your team. For them to be able to duplicate your success, you have to give them your success as an example. And you can only achieve that success with the right marketing system in place, so be very careful how you train yourself first and who you choose to guide you. It can mean the difference between successful business and no business at all.
